Hi there!
I’ve been trying EmberGen and it seems like a great software; however, when I try to import the VDBs generated by EmberGen into 3ds Max it doesn’t seem to work.
Using Corona’s CVolumeGrid, I click Load from file and select one VDB. The problem is that the gizmo disappears, and the Statistics show the Size as empty. The flame and density grids also display 0 cells.
If I load a VDB from this site: https://www.openvdb.org/download/, everything works fine; therefore, I know that the problem is not with 3ds Max and/or Corona.
What am I doing wrong?
Software used:
- EmberGen 1.1.2
- 3ds Max 2024.2.5 Security Fix
- Corona 10 (Hotfix 2)
In the simulation you’ve created in EmberGen is there a full simulation that should be rendered on frame 1, or does it take time to build up? You may need to scrub through the timeline to see it
Sorry for the delay.
I don’t know if I understood your question. Here’s a video that demonstrates my problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yeYMZnOx5A&ab_channel=mrlightwriter
Hey no worries! Can you try going into the VDB export node and reducing the VDB threshold to 0?
You may also want to name your export something like filename_###
. I know that Blender wants the sequence to have the same numerical presentation (001 for frame 1, 010 for frame 10, etc).
Ultimately I am not sure what the problem is here exactly but the default EmberGen preset can be exported and loaded into Blender. So the data is there, it’s just a matter of setting up 3DS Max (or corona) correctly

Thanks for your suggestions!
I solved my issue by setting the frame offset other value than 0, in CVolumeGrid. The issue now is that my results are nowhere near the ones that appear in Embergen, but I believe this is absolutely an user error. I must watch some tutorials in order to see what I can improve.
Thank you once again for your help!
