Stylized shading style for explosions and smoke

Hi! I wanted to get a stylized shading style for my explosions (something like you can see in this examples: https://twitter.com/tuatara_vfx/status/1375838853060120578 https://www.artstation.com/artwork/LeJrl5 https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nQ41z9). I’ve achieved some results that kinda look like some approach to what I’m looking for by playing around with the Edge Detect rendering style but can’t really achieve a good look. Could you explain me how I could achieve this kind of shading? Thank you!

You would need to go into the scene node and change RGB quantization to something around 10. Make sure your shadows are a dark greyscale color (extinction etc) and then it should look decently fine. Playing with higher density values in the shading node would likely help as well.

Thank you for the reply Nick, I’m starting to get there. Anyway, I don’t really understand the extinction thing. If it’s not too much to ask, could you give me a more detailed explanation on that step? Thank you very much.
